So in deciding to shoot a short video with actors dressed as KKK members discussing a film featuring predominantly characters and performers of color, the entire existence of the Klan is being ridiculed and disempowered. This is done specifically without using any racial, ethnic, or gender-based indicators. It purposely subverts racism and violence rather than expanding upon or embracing it.

This is more than a bit of a stretch. While I applaud your intentions, please know that it didn't come off that way. If you have to explain the joke after the fact, then it didn't work in the first place.

That said, I'm still looking forward to "Namesake" and would definitely make time for H&K 2. Good luck with these and future projects!

Wait- it's not called the naam-uh-saa-kay? You've got to be kidding me! They really should make that clearer on the bookcover.
This is really cool Kal. This movie is so amazing and I am really blown away by all of the work you are putting into it.
lots of love.

I believe that one big mistake that is made by Bollywood or Hollywood Indian actors and
directors is that they do not go on the popular television talk shows such as Oprah , Jay Leno and David Letterman to talk about and preview scenes from the movie , such as The Namesake - stars of other Hollywood movies quite frequently made rounds of talk shows to plug their movies. Karl Penn if you read this do let me know if you agree with me -

I would also like to send to you a suggestion about your sequel to Harold and Kumar.

You should try to appear on Jon Stewart

Beautifully underplayed, Kal! :-)

How come The Namesake isn't being advertised more broadly on major network television stations?

Want to hear something quite sad? In my film class, I was talking about my excitement for the Namesake when some kid asks me about the film. I begin to tell him the plot... he goes 'Oh! I've heard of that movie, but I think it's called "na-meh-sa-kay"' My reaction: "......." No joke. I thought he might've been kidding. Nope. I basically died a little right there. Then today I saw this... and practically died again... this time of laughter though, so it's all good.

Peace

Kal

The movie looks promising, but I wonder why it is not being advertised. I stay in Milwaukee but don't think this movie will be released in the interiors. Anyway, I can even head to Chicago to watch it. Kudos to you and Mira for giving us such wonderful cinema.

Rusty.

Reminds me of 2 joke which actually happened.

1. A south indian tv host, who introduced an english title "Challenge" as Chalengey - meaning "lets go" in Hindi.

2. A Doordarshan host who introduced a kannada movie "Banker Maargayya" where Maargayya was a name, as "Banker Mar Gaya "
meaning The banker is dead.

Cheers.

Mr. Kal,

I don't understand... This post, in support for human rights and condemnation of racial prejudice, seems to be in direct contrast with the role that you played on "24" this season.

For those who did not see it -- your character was a Muslim, South Asian kid whose father (though innocent) is arrested for terrorism in the name of Islam. The audience, like the character's white neighbors, is expected to sympathize with your character and be outraged at the racial injustice.... BUT then the kid turns out to be a ruthless terrorist after all!

Do you think that playing this character supported the popular perception that people of color (and Muslims) are more likely to be terrorists? How do you relate your participation in the "24" plot with your egalitarian ideas expressed in this blog?

When I first read The Namesake, it really resonated with me, because I have been born and brought up in the States...with the majority of my family living in India. I found the character of Gogol/Nikhil to be very realistic as I've watched many young people of Indian origin go through similar situations in their journey from childhood to adulthood. The clip that you posted is unfortunately quite realistic...and although it's amusing, it's kind of sad that despite the fact that the novel has won several literary awards...people are unable to pronounce the name correctly because the book and now the film is associated with the south east asian diaspora. I'm really looking forward to watching the movie, as I've read the book several times....Kal, I've enjoyed watching you in several roles from American Desi to present....all of your roles have made interesting statements, and most of them have kept me laughing for days...Best of luck to you in all your future endeavors!

Dude!

Kal! I love your work! It all started off when I watched "Harold and Kumar" and I laughed my lungs out, and believe me so did the rest of the theatre! Since then I keep running in to your movies quite by accident actually and I think you add character to each and everyone of them. "where's the party yarr" was one, "epic movie" was another, and just a few days ago I came across "NameSake" and really loved it! So I was googling you and came across this blog and thought hec! I need to say something here!
I'd love to keep ranting on and on, but I know you probably have a lot on your plate but if you do have the time to drop me a mail, pls do, I'd love to hear from you. I'm not even Indian, I'm Sri Lankan but I really feel the "Desi" Pride when I see you up on the screen!
I got two questions for you, :o) I've kept them as short as possible ...
a) How do u feel about having changed your name after having played this role?
b) Has anyone ever told you, you look like Russel Peters?...

Looking forward the H&K2...

Ciao for now,
Shaanea

"Karl Penn"!

Somehow, I don't think the point was made.

It makes bats in my belfrey when people think that 'purposefully' is actually 'purposely'. The former is a word; the latter is not. Thank you for encouraging the continued education of Guru Ghandi.

Two new studies show why some people are more attractive for members of the opposite sex than others.

The University of Florida, Florida State University found that physically attractive people almost instantly attract the attention of the interlocutor, sobesednitsy with them, literally, it is difficult to make eye. This conclusion was reached by a series of psychological experiments, which were determined by the people who believe in sending the first seconds after the acquaintance. Here, a curious feature: single, unmarried experimental preferred to look at the guys, beauty opposite sex, and family, people most often by representatives of their sex.

The authors believe that this feature developed a behavior as a result of the evolution: a man trying to find a decent pair to acquire offspring. If this is resolved, he wondered potential rivals. Detailed information about this magazine will be published Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

In turn, a joint study of the Rockefeller University, Rockefeller University and Duke University, Duke University in North Carolina revealed that women are perceived differently by men smell. During experiments studied the perception of women one of the ingredients of male pheromone-androstenona smell, which is contained in urine or sweat.

The results were startling: women are part of this repugnant odor, and the other part is very attractive, resembling the smell of vanilla, and the third group have not felt any smell. The authors argue that the reason is that the differences in the receptor responsible for the olfactory system, from different people are different.

It has long been proven that mammals (including human) odor is one way of attracting the attention of representatives of the opposite sex. A detailed article about the journal Nature will publish.

Hey...or I should I say Eh! from Canada.
Loved The NAMESAKE, you did an awesome protrayal of a second generation South Asian. I have tried finding the soundtack in Canada. no luck. Went to the UK this week and thought I would find it there (Sawhney being from there), no luck again. Really surprised that the movie didnt get more attention in Canada, US and UK. Very little marketing on our side of the border.

Do you do stand up? If yes, any shows in Canada?

PS - You so do not look like Russel Peters...except the brown commonality (lol)
